David Pher ft. Chronfused “Overpowering Space”
Diverting away from the routine is what’s expected if you want to score a spot on the Rebellion release calendar. As an offshoot of Damian Lazarus’ esteemed Crosstown Rebels imprint, every signing must align with the label’s norm-evading philosophy. Enter David Pher, a Berlin-based producer whose two-tracker meets this criteria.
Hitting shelves next week, Right Here sees Pher linking up with spoken-word dealer Chronfused to craft two perplexing productions for the floor. Living on the B-side is “Overpowering Sound,” a deep tech cut with head-tripping textures filling out its framework. Buoyant basslines creep along effortlessly, propping up eerie chime melodies that coexist with spurts of congruous vocal lines.
Available May 4 via Rebellion.
Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
Not really… I worked on the arrangement for quite a long time. I showed the idea of the track to Damian and Michal. Then, I showed the track to some friends of mine who are not in the business; they just go out clubbing and enjoy the music in the clubs. They liked it and gave me little suggestions.
Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
Open-air, after-hours, beach, club, or while making love.
How do you measure the success of a track?
When people realize it in this mass of releases. It’s also a success when it gives the people who listen to that track a good feeling and [they] start to dream, creating an atmosphere in their mind. I want to take the listener on a journey.
What were you doing when you came up with the idea for this song? Did you drop what you were doing and get to work, or did you make notes and get to it when you could?
I always worked a bit on the track. First, I was using a French vocal, which fitted very nicely. Then, the Rebellion release “French Girl in Berghain” came out, and the idea was gone. I never really have a plan when I start a track. It always develops while producing.
If this song were a color, what color would it be?
A rainbow.
