Boy Kiss Girl “Lean on Me”
You can always count on Tube & Berger’s Kittball Records to roll out primo releases for all manners of parties. And it’s not just the heavyweights they’re concerned about, although there are plenty of them to go around, since the German-based label is known to keep a close ear on understated talent. The latest big find is of Boy Kiss Girl, an enigmatic producer who prefers to have his face remain hidden in the shadows in order to keep his passion for music unhinged. He’s ready to turn in his debut single for the Kitt crew, and it’s a silky-soft slice of house. The caressed crooning on the cut is bolstered by subtle drum work and a tender guitar, which he makes sing with infectious licks that will have lips pursing and hips gyrating. It became a complete package once cofounder Juliet Sikora and their go-to guy P.A.C.O. provided an added perkiness to place the piece closer to the dancefloor.
In the near future, you’ll be hearing more on Boy Kiss Girl—and of his guitar, which he is crafting from American black cherry wood in an old, small carpenter’s workshop. He says it will define his next single on Armada, “Ocean.”
Available September 8 via Kittball.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
This melody and lyric came to me when I got back home after a long tour. It was the sweet feeling of coziness and warmth—the feeling of HOME.
Was there one particular moment in the recording or mixing process of this track that made you feel as though you were creating something pretty damn special?
Generally, composing is just like brainstorming: Playing about randomly until something happens that feels special. This is the magic moment, which is necessary before taking it to the studio. This can be something small, like when the voice melts with a certain instrument, two melodies combine, or even a special little mistake that makes the song unique.
Do you think advances in computer technology and gear have affected your creativity?
Actually, Boy Kiss Girl songs are made mostly without computers. Most of the recordings are made with real instruments; the drums come from some analog drum machines, recorded on an analog tape machine from the ‘70s to keep the music as warm as possible.
What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
The amplifier for the guitar used in the track was one that I found at a flea market. I’m a big fan of the quirky sound it’s been giving.
How do you measure the success of a track?
Actually, I think any artist should try to not be swayed too much by the possible commercial success of his or her work. To want to collect likes, plays and shares is the kryptonite of all contemporary music. I’m a dreamer, so when people let me know the music touches them, this is the proudest I can be. It’s the most amazing and rewarding to be able to give feelings and allow people to express their emotions through the music.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
Feeling where your roots are, where your home is, where you belong, where your real friends and family are. Where your heart is.
If this song were a color, what color would it be?
Ochre yellow. The next release, “Ocean,” is going to be turquoise blue.
Thanks for the interview. Keep kissing.
