Landis LaPace “Renaissance”
Landis LaPace was a fresh name that came across my radar when we premiered his track “The Heat” at the end of July. While the track landed on Main Course, the twisted bass growls sounded like it would’ve fit nicely on dirtybird. Now, the young Floridian is back with a recently released two-track EP on the Perfect Driver imprint. “Renaissance” is a bit darker than “The Heat” and dips into late-night techno territory. LaPace took to the decks at Nocturnal Wonderland last weekend in denim overalls, looking like a young Mac Demarco, and played a strong set well beyond his years. Tear into the track below, and catch some insight from the upstart.
Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
I think the best setting to hear this track would be dancing your face off at a sweaty warehouse party at 2am.
How do you measure the success of a track?
I measure the success of a track by the creativity and ingenuity of the song and how people react to it when it’s played live. Also, seeing the support from tastemakers in the industry is fantastic as well.
Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
This track actually came together very quickly—in about a day. I started off with the dark melody and then built everything around that. Normally, I start out with the bassline and then go from there, but it’s always an unpredictable process, so you never know how a song is going to come together.
What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
My favorite sound would have to be the dark and ominous pad that plays the main chords on the breakdown. I think this sound is what creates the dark vibe that I love about this track.
If this song were a color, what color would it be?
I think purple or dark grey would be a good fit for this.
