Jay Shepheard Gives Catz ’n Dogz’s “Stay” a Sauntering Rerub
The moment Catz ’n Dogz sent their third LP, Colour Theory, off into circulation, those who picked it up were quick to see this Polish duo had polished up their sound. The 14-track release, issued on Pets Recordings, was ripe with a newfound sense of melody and a more-than-usual list of vocal talents. In it, Grzegorz and Wojciech rattled their outgrown cages and made headroom for a shift in their dynamic. It worked better than they might have predicted.
Now, they’re reshipping the album, having summoned an intimidating list of remixers to go to town on their body of bits. Tucked in the center of the assortment—which features takes from Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones and Anja Schneider—is this nuanced rerub from Jay Shepheard.
Recognized for mining the middle ground between house and disco, the Berlin-based groover takes the languid original up a notch. Lending the hushed vocals a nice bed of sauntering basslines and gauzy chord stabs to roll around in, his remix is an obvious highlight here. Peep the premiere below, after hearing a few words from the man himself:
I loved the original of this, so when I was offered the choice of tracks to remix, it was an easy pick. I wanted to keep the spirit of the original intact but make something a bit more club-friendly. I’ve been playing it out pretty much every gig since I finished it. I have a good relationship with Catz ‘n Dogz; we share the same studio space. We spend quite a bit of time together, so it was nice to work on something of theirs.
Available March 11 via Pets Recordings.
