Martin Cloud Paces Forward With Upbeat House Single “We Are the Future”
If the electronic music world were a Mean Girls cafeteria, snobs might be tempted to label late house mutations “the Plastics”: shiny and popular, but lacking soul. But Russian producer and DJ Martin Cloud’s tech house mashup “How Deep Is Your Soul,” released earlier this year, could be spun as a rebuttal. Other styles Martin (Marat Khafizov) has worked in include progressive (2016’s “Traverse”), as well as bootleg edits of electronic legends New Order and big house acts Lifelike and Kris Menace. He’s also released bass house and G-house patches.
Martin’s latest, “We Are the Future” with vocals by fellow Russian Eluna, has earned props from veterans Don Diablo and Markus Schulz. As fans of all shades of house, we can see why. The track opens slowly with Eluna’s sweet, pitched-up voice declaring “The future is people,” before dropping an early breakdown that rebuilds into spacey synth notes moving over a deep and sparse bassline. A bit progressive, a bit future house, it captures elements of Martin’s past work and hints at his evolution. Martin may be up and coming—his first SoundCloud upload was in 2005 and his first social media post was just this month—but as this track’s vibe and title imply, we’ll likely be hearing from Martin for a while to come.
