Sam Koen Wraps “Birds” in the Warmth of Cancun’s Idyllic Beaches
Although there is a strong international presence in the EDC Mexico programming, room is always reserved on the lineup for some of the hometown heroes. Sam Koen happens to be one of the locals who, even though he now hangs his hat in Cancun, caught the bug for the groove while growing up in Mexico City. In anticipation of his third appearance at the festival, the Mandarina Records founder has been hitting the studio hard to whip up something special for his set.
“I am very excited and eager to present everything I have been working on in the last year,” Koen tells Insomniac. “I have had a lot of long nights in the studio, but I’m very satisfied with the result.”
The outcome of all those clocked hours comes in the form of “Birds,” a deep-house gem wrapped in the warmth of Cancun’s idyllic coastline. The progression he puts into play here mimics the magic of the setting sun, with a generous number of bird-call samples caught in the undertow of ebbing synths and bubbling basslines. It’s not only Sam Koen’s not-so-secret weapon this weekend, but also a way for him to bring a little bit of the beach back with him when he hits up his old stomping grounds.
