“April is the cruelest month,” some poet once wrote—a poet who clearly never experienced the cruelty of a Vegas summer. People in other parts of the world who heard the news about EDC’s date change from June to May might think, “What difference could a few weeks make?” They’ve probably never experienced the onset of Las Vegas summer heat.

EDC Las Vegas 2018 tickets are on sale now.

So, here’s to May, one of the best times of the year to be in Vegas, and definitely ideal for an outdoor festival. Here’s why:

1. The temps

Check out those average temps: 88 F during the day, and down to as low as 60 overnight.

2. Fun and games

While we’re psyched you’ll be able to camp on-site for the first time at the festival, anyone staying on the Strip will enjoy no shortage of fun and games. Let’s start with the obvious: pool season. (Yeah, yeah, you could enjoy them in June, too, but then you risk those third-degree sunburns—see point #1.) The dayclubs will definitely be jumping. Some of our favorites include Daylight, Drai’s, Marquee, Wet Republic, Encore Day Club, and even the OG, Rehab at Hard Rock Hotel. Not down with the club scene? Then maybe you just want to hang at Mandalay Beach’s big wave pool, MGM’s lazy river, or Bellagio’s massive spa tub. Or check out one of the two water parks, Wet ‘n’ Wild and Cowabunga Bay, both very easy to get to right in the Vegas valley.

3. Feel like driving?

May is the perfect time to check out the Grand Canyon or some of the other natural wonders nearby, including Zion National Park in Utah and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Death Valley is still doable (in fact, the wildflowers usually bloom there in May). Mt. Charleston might even still have some snow on it!

4. Speaking of driving

If you love car culture, you’re in luck, because even though EDC rules the Speedway, Downtown on Fremont Street, the Las Vegas Car Stars are taking over with a tribute to vintage Beetles, famous movie cars, and lots from the Shelby American museum. Plus, it’s a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network, so that’s cool.

5. Cinco de Mayo

You haven’t done Cinco de Mayo till you’ve done it in Vegas.

6. Star Wars

May the Fourth (you Star Wars fans know what that’s about): Look for events at the Millennium Fandom Bar and the Nerd, among other spots.

7. The ‘Ohana Festival

This is one of many bringing together the city’s huge Hawaiian community.

8. The Indian Food & Cultural Festival

Just yum.

9. Helldorado Days

Vegas’ own historic Helldorado Days Western celebration sees our carnival and parade and raises it a rodeo.

10. The Shows

Take a break from the oontz to see J.Lo do her thing live at Planet Hollywood. Or if you get here a few days before EDC, you’ll definitely want to catch Peter Hook & the Light, the legendary Joy Division/New Order bassist. Other permanent shows you might want to check out on the Strip: Michael Jackson ONE or The Beatles Love from Cirque du SoleilAbsinthe, the burlesque/circus revue that’s become a must-see; or Baz, the tribute to Baz Lurhmann’s “Star-crossed Love” movies, mashing up Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet and The Great Gatsby (if you luck out, they might actually pull you out of the audience to watch the show onstage. It happened to me!).

EDC Las Vegas 2018 takes place Friday, May 18, through Sunday, May 20, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. For more information, visit the official website.
