12th Planet Has a Refrigerator Full of BBQ Sauce
12th Planet, the bass music OG and Smog Records founder born John Dadzie, lives in a sprawling downtown Los Angeles apartment officially referred to as The Compound. Functioning as a work/live space and a hangout spot for the Smog crew, (Dadzie’s roomie is Top Shelf Management founder Danny United), the industrial loft-style Compound features a recording studio, DJ decks, a large-ass television and a couch that Skrillex used to crash on. We stopped by on a hot afternoon and had Dadzie show us around. Here, in Dadzie’s own words, is the guided tour.
Nachos
Dude, these are the best. These are so spicy! It’s always the first one that’s the hardest. I eat these at least once a week.
Control Canvas Print
This piece was the album cover of Whiiite‘s Control five year anniversary or six year anniversary mix, and it has a bunch of DJs that played in the early days of Control. From the right there’s Datsik, Zedd, Tommy Trash, Skrillex, myself, Brad Hoss, Jaso, Whiiite, Beth Phares, Wolfgang Gartner, Dillon Francis, A-Trak and Nero, with the illuminati in the back. The artist is some guy from Mexico I think, one of Mr. White’s friends. I thought it was cool with the last supper vibe, and it had me in it, so I was like “fuck yeah.” You cannot go out and buy this.
Tittsworth’s Bike
This is not my bike; this is Tittsworth’s bike. Jesse Tittsworth is a DJ from L.A., and he’s left this bike here for the past three months. We went out drinking on a Friday and he never came back to get it. I think it’s going to be a permanent staple of The Compound though; it gets a lot of good looks. It’s got a big ass seat too, man. You can fit, like, ten people on this fucking bike.
Bassboss Speakers
I had a dream of having very loud music attainable in my house, and Bassboss helped make that dream a reality. They’re this company that provides sound for big festivals and like, the David Letterman show. They do Ultra too. I’ve lived in this apartment for seven years and have never had a noise complaint. Everyone is here is really laid-back. I know most of my neighbors. Shouts out to the guys upstairs, and the guys downstairs, and the guys next door, because they’ve been excellent neighbors. I don’t think we’ve been the best.
CDJs
These are Pioneer CDJ 2000 Nexuses. Pioneer gave these to me two years ago. I did a CDJ for their art exhibit and we made this Mayan calendar design that was kind of cool, so then they hooked us up with these. They’re great people.
Rolling Stones Concert Poster
Danny and Frankie [Chan, of L.A.’s iheartcomix] and Leslie put this show together in four days. The Rolling Stones were doing the Staples Center, and they wanted to do a smaller room and a cheaper ticket, and it sold out in ten minutes. I missed it. I was not there. I heard it was fun.
Fan Painting
Some kid in Ohio made this, and it’s really good. It’s a picture of me holding up a 12, even though there are only ten digits on the human hands. Actually there are only eight digits on the human hand, and two opposable thumbs.
Mickey Mouse Desktop
When you stare at Logic or Ableton for too long, you kind of get sick of staring at a screen, so I just chose Mickey Mouse because it’s kind of peaceful. I went to Google images and typed in “desktop backgrounds high res” and this was one of the first ones that popped up, and I just hit “save target as.”
The Fridge
This might be embarrassing. There’s some old-ass eggs in here, and some Red Bulls and 12 Bones Chipotle Blueberry BBQ sauce.
Custom Shoes
There’s this kid in Calgary who hangs out with the Shambhala people; he made these for us. [The company is called Shed Designs.] The one on the right is the artwork from Skrillex’s Full Flex tour, and the middle pair are the artwork for Smog City, which was our first label compilation for my record label Smog, and then 12th Planet, that’s captain obvious there. You can’t really wear them because they’re art. I don’t really want to take them to the festival and get mud all over them. However, I would be swaggin’ on them if I could, that’s for sure.
Smog Christmas Party Photo
This was Christmas 2012 at the old Smog office. These are a bunch of Smog artists and homies. That’s Tittsworth the guy whose bike it is right there. That’s Jessie Andrews, that’s Riddim, that’s Nate Massiv, that’s Steady, that’s Sam that guy whose standing on the other side of the room over there [editors note: Sam waves from other side of room], that’s Danny who I live with but he’s not here right now, and that’s Killagraham from Milo & Otis. That was a good party. We had a breakdance competition in the middle of it, and Drew’s girlfriend Tara, she’s like five feet tall and so awesome, and she just started killin’ it breakdancing. We were like, “What?”
The Roof
I never come up here. It’s too far away dude. You have to like, take the elevator up and walk up a flight of stairs. And there’s no TV out here. How am I going to watch the game?
