Headliner Spotlight: The Le Doorns
With tracks like Above & Beyond’s “Thing Called Love” and Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” it’s hard not to let the melodies of EDM reel you into a PLUR-induced haze. That’s exactly what happened to Los Angeles couple Israel “Izzy” Escamilla and Veronica Cubas—better known as the Le Doorns—when they met at a Hollywood nightclub in 2011. After the trance anthems of Solarstone and Christopher Lawrence seduced their hearts, the two became an official couple following Beyond Wonderland, where they got rave-married with a ring pop.
The rave couple took their EDM-filled love story one deeper when they expanded their little trance family with baby Valerie Isis, conceived after Swedish House Mafia’s Masquerade Motel in 2012. The duo recently got hitched in Las Vegas, weeks before EDC, among close friends and family.
This is their story.
EDM has helped me see the world differently. I put myself in people’s shoes more, and I’m more understanding. I get along with my family a lot more now.
How did electronic music play an important role in the beginning of your relationship?
Veronica: We fell in love really fast, but it felt natural, and the music went hand in hand. Our song was Afrojack’s “Take Over Control.” It was even our ringtones. Izzy also got me into trance because I didn’t know much about it. Now I love artists like Markus Schulz and Armin van Buuren.
Izzy: We were also really into Fedde Le Grand and Sander Van Doorn, and since I didn’t want to have my real name on Facebook for work purposes, I changed it to Izzy Le Doorn. She changed hers to Veronica Le Doorn, and then everyone started calling us “The Le Doorns.”
How do you think EDM has impacted your lives for the better?
Izzy: Everyone is so welcoming; they don’t judge you, and they treat you like you’re family. Even if they don’t know you, they act like they have known you forever. I love that kind of positive energy.
Veronica: EDM has helped me see the world differently. I put myself in people’s shoes more, and I’m more understanding. I get along with my family a lot more now. Plus, I’ve gained friendships I didn’t have before, and I feel much happier because Izzy and I are able to be together in everything we do.
So, how did your little rave baby Valerie Isis come to be?
Veronica: Izzy went to the Swedish House Mafia Masquerade Motel in Vegas in 2010, and I went in Miami in 2011. We had a blast, and after partying with our friends, we came home, and that’s when she was conceived.
Izzy: We even went to Miami Music Week not knowing [Valerie] was pregnant. We found out two weeks after we came back, but since we already had our EDC Las Vegas trip planned and paid for, we went anyway.
That’s awesome! Will you expose her to EDM events as she gets older?
Veronica: I would take her to an event like Burning Man to be aware of what’s out there. I want her to see what background her mom and dad come from, but I also won’t be paying for her to go to festivals. I want her to work hard to go to events, like we do, and not be spoiled in that way.
Izzy: Maybe we’ll be partying with her one day at an underground, once she’s old enough and responsible. But if she likes dubstep, she’s grounded!
What did you enjoy most about your recent Vegas wedding, and what are you looking forward to, now that you’re married?
Izzy: It was so “us.” We partied and stayed up all weekend and almost forgot to get the marriage license, but we survived and made it to the wedding. It’s a good time in our lives, and everything has worked out great. I’m looking forward to raising Valerie together and watching her grow.
Veronica: I loved spending time with our families and friends in our favorite environment, with good vibes all around. I would like to do it again at EDC, though. We have our Groove Cruise Miami honeymoon to look forward to. Can’t wait!
