Come Take a Ride on Hood Rich’s “Magic Carpet”
Australian powerhouse Hood Rich has a solid reputation across the boards of electronic music. He’s hit the decks to large crowds everywhere from Chinese Laundry to Elsewhere, and he’s hosted many more big names at events organized by Very Casual. Not stopping there, he has also proven himself as a top rate producer, with releases on This Ain’t Bristol, House of Hustle, Fools Gold, Psycho Disco!, and Medium Rare. He’s already been featured here for a number of Track of the Day pieces. Now, he’s returning to Medium Rare to drop a hot dance thumper on Friday called “Magic Carpet.”
This is another track that carries the vibe of the best four-on-the-floor tracks of the mid ‘00s, but pulls those sounds into the present day. Definitely leaning in a club direction, Hood Rich starts with a solid beat that jumps with tension and energy. This is definitely a tune built on a party vibe, but with a cool and reserved lean. The secret here is pairing a catchy vocal hook with an insanely funky bassline.
“I didn’t really know what direction it was going for with this initially, but I knew it had to have a big low-end and gritty drums,” Hood Rich explains. “After that sitting was right with the vocals, the rest of the song wrote itself. I really enjoy hearing contrast in dance records, so with this one, I wanted to bring that feeling to the table by combining of some interesting sound design choices with a really simple arrangement.”
“Magic Carpet” is the kind of track that implores a crowd to get up and have fun. Any place and any time can become a party when this one drops. That’s probably exactly what Hood Rich had in mind.
