Conrank Prepares to “Smash That” at PROJECT:Z With an Untouchable Grime-Laced Cut

Fresh off the back of his hugely popular Circus Records debut, the Los Angeles–based Brit (via Shanghai) returns to the scene of the crime with another massive, grime-laced, bass-crushing release.

Originally touring Europe as a straight-up beatboxer, Conrank has been climbing the ranks as he continues to pour his love of beats and basslines into a unique mix of grime, dubstep, and drum & bass that is all his own. With a sound the label describes as “dangerous,” Conrank himself calls it “music that makes you screw your face up, whether you want to or not.” We call it badass.

Hit “Pull Out the Laser” if you want to go all-in on that Conrank chest-thumping sound, as the sci-fi gangsta lean on this one is sure to have the heads bouncing off the walls. Still, for our money, “Smash That” is where it’s at if you want to feel the full power and fury of all that Conrank is capable of. Dank vocals and a breakbeat-stuttering groove hold it down, while the filthy bottom-end and street-level hook elevate this one into epic territory.

“Joining forces with Circus Records is like coming full circle,” Conrank tells us when asked about the latest release. “I left the UK, hibernated in my studio in Shanghai for eight years, started touring the US, and now am finally connecting back with my home and with a label that influenced me so much back in the day, when I was just discovering bass music.”
