Dosem Serves Up Some Proper Techno With an Exclusive Playlist
Straight from the streets of Girona, Spain, soulful DJ/producer Dosem has been dropping proper techno gems since breaking through in 2008. He joined Technasia’s Sino imprint, where he dropped his masterful club track “Silent Drop,” which immediately paved the path to his burgeoning career. He’s since released music with all the major players in the house and techno circuit, including Suara, Toolroom, Intec, Tronic, Bedrock and more.
Seeking further musical freedom, Dosem founded his Houstrike label, which reflects his passion for styles beyond the club music scene. His method of creating such striking sounds has allowed him to amass an endless set of techno- and house-driven tunes that every venue and festival want to host. Continuously on the road, Dosem has been making stops around the world, and he’s now hitting the streets of Los Angeles for a special performance alongside Green Velvet and Human Resources Saturday, February 18, at Exchange LA.
Prior to his performance, Dosem is serving up some proper techno vibes with an exclusive playlist. We chatted with Dosem and explored his desire for creating music outside the genre’s boundaries.
Your hometown of Girona, Spain, has a history of dance music. How has the scene molded your music today? Do you see a change in your music as the years come and go, or do you try to remain loyal to your core sound?
We had a long story of electronic music in my hometown with clubs like Blau and La Sala del Cel, with lots of international artists playing every weekend. Now the situation is much different, since both clubs have closed. But we have an electronic music school, Eumes, where I collaborate and participate in many events with some really good promoters in the city. I’m very optimistic about the future.
Regarding my music, if you listen to my entire discography, I have always maintained the same musical concept. It’s not something planned; it has happened organically. I would never make a track I would not dance to or with which I did not feel identified. What has changed is the technical aspect and, of course, an updated sound in many other external layers of the production. But the essence of my music is telling stories.
You mentioned in a past interview that you initially wanted to be a video game creator and wanted to use your music in the soundtracks. Any chance you still plan on pursing that?
After the years, I focused only on music, although I always keep an eye on what happens in the video game market—not as a gamer, but I am simply aware of the technological developments. Lately, I [have been] more interested in technology that offers experiences like virtual reality, something I think will change the way we interact with each other and the digital world in a few years. I see unlimited possibilities, and it is something I would like to explore in the future and also through my musical projects.
Are there any big projects you’re currently working on?
Yes, last year I started my own personal label, Houstrike. It’s a multimedia project where I basically do everything myself: music, design, covers, videos, mastering, etc. It’s also a great place to do collabs with other artists.
You’re currently working on a new EP for Octopus Recordings, and you have your own label, Houstrike. In what ways do the two imprints relate, and how do they differ? Do you feel at home with both labels?
I met Sian from Octopus last year, and there was a very good personal connection. He asked me for some tracks for Octopus, and now we are preparing an EP. I like very much how he focuses his sets, [as well as] the philosophy of the label. With my Houstrike label, I center myself on more mental, deep and atmospheric sounds. Having my label allows me to control not only the music, but also an image.
