Emanuel Satie Drops Deep, Shimmering Rework of “All I Need to Get High”
Not only is Crosstown Rebels boss Damian Lazarus currently celebrating his label’s epic 15-year milestone, but he’s also himself enjoying something one might describe as a creative purple patch. In particular, the last year saw him releasing an acclaimed new album as part of his Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons project, a live/electronic ensemble of collaborators that has allowed Lazarus to fuse his singer-songwriter instincts with his love of house and techno.
As an album situated comfortably between two worlds—the live stage and the dancefloor—last year’s Heart of Sky LP was perfect remix fodder from the very start, and there have been plenty to date. They’re all being brought together, along with a handful of new exclusives, on the Heart of Sky (Remixes) album, which arrives on Crosstown Rebels at the end of this week. We’ve got one of its fresh reworks from Emanuel Satie as our Track of the Day.
Satie works a shaman-like atmosphere into his remix of one of the album’s most recognizable cuts, “All I Need to Get High.” Swapping out the original’s broken beats in favor of the percussive sway of four-four house, the string accompaniments are balanced beautifully with its deep synth and basslines. On top of all of this are the simmering vocals from the original that opened last year’s album in such excellent style.
Available April 26 via Crosstown Rebels.
