Experience the Deep Cosmos of Ronnie Spiteri’s “Living on the Edge”

Many sources would refer to Ronnie Spiteri as a quickly rising name in the tech house world, and for good reason: There’s a lot of both subtlety and skill going into his production. “Living on the Edge”—a murky and echoing driver for VIVa Music sublabel iVAV Recordings—is a prime example.

Thumping in with a simple, chunky kick and tightly hissing hat, the track rolls along, picking up momentum until it finally falls away into an oceanic drift of space. Captivating stabs chime in at choice moments, each with a reverberated surrealism. This dreamlike soundscape is haunted even more by operatic samples that slip just into the periphery of the mix.

A tightly built drum kit keeps the energy flowing, while Spiteri is thoughtful enough to give this track plenty of stillness and room. The dynamic rolls away and hangs on the thinnest of threads for prolonged moments, before crashing back down with a strength heightened by the light touches of sound here. “Living on the Edge” is as ambient as it is rhythmically driven, an enchanting journey from beginning to end. Pick it up off of Spiteri’s Flashing Lights EP, which is set to drop at the end of next week.
