Metronome #145: Black Girl / White Girl
Just last year, Black Girl / White Girl burst onto the global scene with a clutch of underground tech weapons—and a dream. Now the Dutch-based duo, aka Ty and Karin, are back with a debut three-track EP, titled Space Cookies, on Green Velvet’s signature Relief label.
Notable tracks like “Loopholez” and “Rumble Rubber” are already making the rounds with top jocks, like Detlef, Latmun, and Hot Creations’ Jamie Jones. So, we thought it was high time the girls step up with a proper mix.
What’s their inspiration for the half-hour workout? “It’s got some big tracks we’re digging at the moment—plus some brand-new tracks from us,” they tell us. “Thirty minutes full of peak tech goodness, grooves, and dirty basslines—exactly what you would get at a Black Girl / White Girl DJ set.”
Stream their exclusive Metronome mix above, featuring standout selections from Black Girl / White Girl, M.F.S: Observatory, and more. Enjoy!
How did the Space Cookies EP come together?
We wanted to create something super weird and different, so we just started experimenting with different vocals, samples, and the Microbrute synth. It’s worth mentioning that we never work on EPs as such; we produce our tracks individually, based on what’s inspiring us at that moment, and then later on, we see what fits where. In this case, all tracks sounded like A-sides, so it was a no-brainer to send it all off to Green Velvet. Luckily, he felt our vibe, and so here we are!
What does it mean for you to be on a respected US underground label like Relief?
It’s a dream come true. Green Velvet is an inspiration to us, so to know that he liked not one, or two, but three of our tracks—that means a lot. Needless to say, the journey to releasing on a label like Relief has not been easy, but all the hours spent in the studio (and not partying) were so worth it.
What can fans expect from your live show?
PARTY! We always take our passion into the booth, and it shows. It’s not just about showing the ravers a good time; we also wanna have a good time with them.
How does living in Amsterdam inspire your work in the studio?
Life inspires us, every day. It’s not about where you are—inspiration can be found anywhere.
Who’s your all-time favorite DJ of all time, and why?
The Martinez Brothers and Jamie Jones. Their sets are always unique, and there’s this constant uncertainty about what kind of set you’re going to get. Plus, they’re always having fun and getting into it in the booth; that vibe is always contagious as hell, and we love it.
Top track of 2018 so far?
Ooh, that is hard and super horrible to consider. We had to make a short list. Here ya go:
- Tennan “Dis One”
- Detlef “Deep Dip”
- Will Clarke “Take a Seat”
- Kevin Knapp “Blah Blah Blah”
Who’s an up-and-coming producer to watch out for?
Us, of course. We’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to tighten our sound, and 2018 will be the year we’re going to let it all out. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
What’s next?
We’re debuting on Relief with the Space Cookies EP on April 20. These tracks are already being played by Green Velvet, Detlef, Latmun, Jamie Jones, Mat.Joe, and Wade. It’s without a doubt our best work to date, and it’s shaping up to be a career-defining release for us. There are a few other releases we’re still finalizing right now, including the tracks “Fat Soda” and “Skinny Fries,” which have grown into highly sought-after unicorns in the underground scene at this point. Stay tuned for news on these dropping very soon.
Anything to add?
We hope you enjoy this mix, and if it wasn’t enough for ya: expect to see our lil’ faces in your city real soon!
