Metronome #026: Go Freek
Insomniac’s Metronome series features mixes from some of today’s fastest-rising electronic stars, as well as championed legends. It takes listeners deep across a wide range of genres, movements, cultures, producers, artists and sounds that make up the diverse world of electronic music.
The Sweat It Out crew down in Australia knows a thing or two about stacking up a varsity-level roster of talent. They’ve helped launch the careers of artists like Motez and RÜFÜS, and they’ve teamed up with OWSLA to drop the highly anticipated EP from What So Not. One of the label’s newest additions to the squad is the red-hot duo Go Freek.
Last year, the guys added another subgenre to the growing pool of names after they branded their crunchy, bass-heavy club music as “gutter tech.” The name makes perfect sense, and they’ve just released their first single of the year, called “How Long,” which has garnered support from the likes of Boys Noize and Jack Beats.
In the latest edition of the Metronome mix series, they deliver a 90-minute introductory course into the banging world of gutter tech.
How did the name “gutter tech” come about?
One day, we were trying to come up with a term to describe our music. We had a whole heap of options, none of which were any good, and then our manager suggested “gutter tech.” As soon as we heard it, we loved it. So technically, he coined the term, but it was quickly stolen and personalized by us!
There’s an abundance of great music coming out of Australia at the moment. Is there something in the Vegemite?
There really is so much talent over here at the moment, and it’s so great to see. We have a pretty close-knit scene in Australia, despite the large distances between states. Everyone within the scope of dance music supports each other and feeds off each other, in a sense. There truly could be something in the Vegemite, or the water system, but we think it’s more of a collective love of trying to make something unique which drives Australian producers.
Give us a rundown of a typical day for you guys.
Get up, have breakfast, go for a surf, come home and slave away on Ableton, have lunch, slave away on Ableton again, maybe go for another surf, have dinner, back to Ableton, and then sleep.
Tell us a bit about the mix.
This mix is a whole heap of newish tunes we are loving at the moment, mixed with a couple of older tunes that we have drawn inspiration from in our own productions. Also, it’s got a new, yet-to-be-released remix we did of the latest Crookers single, “I Just Can’t”, as well as our newest single, “How Long.”
What’s on tap for the rest of 2015?
We are just about to go on a national tour for “How Long.” We also have a collaboration coming out with fellow Australian Dom Dolla in the next few months, as well as a few more clubby, gutter tech originals we are currently putting the final touches on! The plan is to focus on our music and hopefully kick some more goals!
