Insomniac’s Metronome series features mixes from some of today’s fastest-rising electronic stars, as well as championed legends. It takes listeners deep across a wide range of genres, movements, cultures, producers, artists and sounds that make up the diverse world of electronic music.

Over the past several years, Meaux Green has built an impressive following via his 808-heavy tracks, which are meant purely for ass-shaking. The Las Vegas–based producer grew up in Miami, a town that has for years held a deep love for hip-hop and helped create the foundation for bass music in the ‘80s. As such, it was easy for Meaux to find inspiration for his twerktastic beats, which often walk the fine line between hip-hop and electronica.

He recently teamed up with up-and-coming producer Sam F for a remix of “Lose My Mind” from A-Trak and Tommy Trash, putting a distinctly broken-beat slant on the tune and adding a modern flair to the Florida breaks sound that helped establish him at home. This is just another feat in a line of high-profile releases, DJ mixes, and festival appearances over the last year that have helped push his star even higher.

In his Metronome mix, Meaux Green has captured the intense vibe and energy of one of his live sets via a blistering, multi-genre ride through massive drum breaks, hip-hop vocals and disgustingly dirty bass.

Your latest remix with Sam F—“Lose My Mind“ from A-Trak and Tommy Trash—has some breakbeat flava. Growing up in South Florida, were you influenced by Miami bass and breaks?
Oh yeah, absolutely. Florida breaks helped pioneer our current rave scene. When I first started DJing, I practiced on vinyl breaks records—mostly stuff from Zone Records, and a few others. My first official remix was for DJ Icey on Zone.

Everyone knows you’re a hip-hop head, but you’re down with punk rock, too. What other musical influences did you have growing up?
When I was a kid, my parents gave me access to their music, so I started listening to David Bowie, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix at a really young age. When I hit the gym, it’s usually the Misfits and that old-school punk shit.

Back in May, you posted on Facebook about the Harambe story and how it relates to the ethical treatment of animals. While it’s since been turned into a meme, do you think there was a deeper story the media may have missed?
It’s incredible to see the widespread outrage that followed the killing of one single animal. If more people saw the kind of shit that goes on at factory farms, things that people are directly supporting with their money, there would be an outcry. The corporations, of course, don’t show you those things, though—and for good reason.

When and why did you become vegan?
I really don’t consider myself completely vegan, although I try my best to avoid all animal products. I figured out pigs are smarter than dogs and behave a lot like them. Initially, I stopped eating pork and beef; then I worked my way into [veganism]. It’s easy to keep it going, since I feel so much better, and it gives me so much more energy to wake up in the morning and piss excellence.

Veganism has become quite widespread, but there are some pockets within the US that may not be so vegan-friendly. Does that make it difficult to find a proper meal sometimes while touring?
Yeah, that’s absolutely the hardest part about it: going out to eat with friends, and sometimes there’s nothing really on the menu. When I’m at home, it’s easy to find great meat replacements and healthy meals, but I make it work when I’m on the road.

What can we expect from Meaux Green next? Remixes? Originals?
I have an official remix for DJ Snake and Yellow Claw coming out soon, an original track with Mystikal, and a really dope original with Tascione, featuring Mark Hardy. I’m really proud of the things I’m working on in the studio right now. My Gang Green crew is going to be very happy.
