Phlegmatic Dogs Drop Garage-Flavored Remix of Ivan Dorn’s “Afrika”
In early April of this year, Ivan Dorn dropped the video for “Afrika” from his 2017 breakout album, OTD, released on his own label, Masterkaya. In the clip for the rumbling, hyper-rhythmic deep bass track, the L.A.-based Ukrainian artist and producer runs around and gets down with youngsters from Uganda’s Masaka Kids Africana orphanage and dance crew.
Now come the remixes, and Dorn is again using the opportunity to help raise both awareness and funds for the group, donating all proceeds from this release to the organization. Since good intentions aren’t enough, he has wisely recruited an international posse of talent who serve up three distinct but funky reinterpretations of the track, including UK garage sensation Huxley, US Afrofuturist Seven Davis Jr, and Russian bass duo Phlegmatic Dogs.
Regulars on AC Slater’s Night Bass imprint, Phlegmatic Dogs strip the original track’s polyrhythms and chants down to a booming kick, smatterings of drum rolls, shuffling, slap-happy hi-hats, woozy synthlines, and snippets of the original vocal. The raucous end result is like Masters at Work on steroids, a raw, garage-flavored rump-shaker tempered by warm, melodic breaks and undertones. It’s an infectious distillation of a catchy groove that will make you feel good while you do good.
