Robosonic and Jan Weigel’s Piano-Dappled “Peach” Gives Us the Warm Fuzzies
“Peach”—the funky, piano-dappled title track from a new EP by German disco-house sensation Robosonic—is out this week on Mother Recordings, home to a self-described group of “ambitious music maniacs” apparently high on love in Berlin. And something about this feels quite right.
A midtempo groove comes on coy with squelchy bass, hand shakers, and a bird-like giggle. Yet “Peach” quickly abandons subtlety with a big kick drum, sizzling hi-hats, swooshing breaks, sassy timbales, a flirty vocal snippet chanting its title, and an irrepressibly giddy piano loop. It is a sophisticated riff on the deep house sound that helped the project (Cord Labuhn and formerly Sacha Robotti) break through in 2007 with their LP Sturm und Drang, singles “Worst Love” and “The Edge,” and remixes for Eddie Amador and Kerri Chandler, as well as landing them on prime labels like Defected, King Street, Toolroom, and Yoshitoshi.
Like some of the best old disco or retro soul-infused tracks by Faze Action, Idjut Boys, Todd Terje, Tuff City Kids, or Wolf + Lamb, “Peach” channels an organic, “live” vibe that gives us the warm fuzzies. On the flip side of the two-track EP, “Icke Und Sie” delivers more of a dark French touch feel.
Available December 8 via Mother Recordings.
