Securing a spot on the release sched of Apollonia Music is enough to catapult the career of any understated producer. It’s an accomplishment Swiss upstart Alci has earned, with his latest EP, Traveling Soul, being snatched up by the lauded Parisian imprint. “Garden of Buddha” heads out the three-tracker, and it perfectly illustrates his knack for positioning left-of-center cuts closer to the club. A languid groove drifts atop stoic spoken-word samples, while an undercurrent of ebullient analog synths bubbles up and bursts beneath a minimalistic rhythm. The aural alchemist has a peculiar, singular sound up his sleeve, and it’s sure to take him very, very far.

Available September 16 via Apollonia Music.

Have you played this one out in any of your sets? If so, what was the response?
Yes, of course. I play all my tracks in my sets to see how they work, how they sound, and how people react. This is helping me a lot in the mixdown process. The crowd response has always been super positive. The track builds up a nice and strong vibe. I guess that’s why it is the A-side of the release.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
Definitely in a club, surrounded by people who want to enjoy the night—a nice atmosphere loaded with energy and good moods all around!

Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
I remember I was heading back from a stay in Ibiza. I was highly motivated to create something that doesn’t have any current hyped sounds… a piece of music that people would still play five years after its release. So, I started recording some self-created sounds, and it quickly became a nice, minimal groove. I remember adding some vocals and instrument samples from my own library of recorded sounds. And that was it—“Garden of Buddha” was alive.

Choose one feeling that sums up this release, and describe it to us.
I was so happy that I had created music that Apollonia played a lot. When Dan Ghenacia asked me if I was up to do an EP for Apollonia, I was impressed and excited. At this point, my motivation went high up to work even more and more.

Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
The Apollonia guys gave me their thoughts about the tracks, and it has resulted in slight changes in their arrangement. Honestly, they know what they are talking about, so why not share points of view. They have a huge knowledge of the crowd, and this is precious to move on—to point out the little details that could be decisive or not.
