Brett Johnson ft. Mikey V “Falling”
This week, Brett Johnson recrudesced on Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s vaunted Classic Music Company imprint with his new The Bounce Is Back EP. The four-track bumper—the title of which builds off his perennial 2002 record Bounce!, also cut by Classic—takes a redolent dip into the sound of Johnson’s formative years. Although it may be a look back at his early days in the game, the release gets all done up in a nu-age manner.
Filling out the EP’s third spot, “Falling” is a vocally driven number that goes down extra smooth. Bubbling with a topline courtesy of Mikey V, sashaying basslines and cascading stabs work in tandem to lay the groove on thick. Soulful and strut-heavy, Brett Johnson hits it home with this retro-futuristic get-down.

Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
No, never. Producers are thieves who will rob their mothers for that perfect bassline. All kidding aside, I worked with the vocalist (Mikey V.) on the vocal arrangements, and my friend Brad Dale (who mixed the track) did a lil’ post-production trickery.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
I came up with the melody and words for the chorus while driving, after having dropped my daughter off at school. It just came to me, and I worked it out as I drove (which is kind of dangerous, ‘cause I was not paying attention) and wrote it down on a taco receipt. Later, Mikey and I would collaborate on writing the full song.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
It’s a song about a person falling and hoping someone will be there for them. No message, just a moment. When my daughter listens to the song (she loves it), she always tells me, “I’ll catch him.” <3
How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
It’s got my voice all over it—bouncy, quirky and soulful.
Choose one feeling that sums up this release and describe it to us.
Happy. Feels like a large, pink marshmallow smothering you, but you can still breathe and see.
