Codes Flips Subsonic Ragga Into Rave Chugger on “Murder Dem”
Known as Brooklyn’s avocado-loving, bass/hip-hop/jungle/breakbeat-producing provocateur, Codes returns with “Murder Dem” on Treasure Fingers’ Psycho Disco! label, home to left-leaning house from Atlanta’s east side. It’s a meeting of freaky house minds, and the result is a pure “rave chugger for the club or warehouse,” as Codes tells us.
“This is a tune I pulled from my love of ragga and soulful female vocal samples,” he adds. “Mix that with a chunky sub bassline, and I’m tickling the jungle roots nerve in my brain all over again.” The result is a hard, relentless groove that starts jacking as soon as the needle drops. His wonky aesthetic finds a natural fit with the label’s boundary-blurring devotion.
The sense of teamwork runs deep. On his social channels, Codes shared a list of tips from his uncle who was teaching him guitar. Some were practical (use a metronome), others more poetic (learn a simple, beautiful song). The takeaway that resonates with Codes especially? “Always remember: Learning and teaching go hand-in-hand. I feel I have learned so much by teaching other people.”
Here’s hoping that collaborative spirit leads to more releases from Codes on Psycho Disco!
