Conrank’s “Hood Shake” Will Turn Your Mind Into Mush
Anything placed on the musical mantle that is DJ Shadow’s Liquid Amber imprint shouldn’t be listened to lightly. The label has been getting behind bass music producers who are known to come at the scene from an entirely new and extraordinarily experimental angle, and Conrank is the latest to make it past their rigorous screening with his boundary-blasting EP, Hemispheres.
Drawing from his everyday experiences in Shanghai, Conrank’s release is a sonic standoff between the East and West, with citations of Chinese culture juxtaposed with the emerging producer’s penchant for forward-facing trap and dubstep. “Hood Shake” is a rumble in the concrete jungle, which gets rolling with slithering melody lines that snake their way underneath invasive drum rolls and all kinds of new-age sound design.
“Hood Shake has been in the making for over two years,” says Conrank. “I was so hyped about the main riff that it took me some serious time to do it justice in the finished production. So far, every time I’ve dropped it, I’ve had to spin it back; when you spend so long creating a track and it has that effect, it’s like no other feeling in the world.”
Available April 26 via Liquid Amber.
