Desert Dwellers “Bird Over Sand Dunes” (ReVisioned)
Slated to release their eighth studio album, Desert Dwellers—consisting of Treavor Moontribe and Amani Friend—are sitting on an otherworldly 12-track offering. The forthcoming LP, titled The Great Mystery, will land on their own Desert Trax imprint, perfectly mirroring the duo’s ongoing effort to find a happy medium between the dancefloor and the yoga mat. It’s transcendental at its very core, but it retains an exceptionally grounded global impression that pulls from their affinity for downtempo, psy-trance, dubstep and more.
Such is the case with the featured track “Bird Over Sand Dunes.” Ethereal and cathartic, the duo invites the listener on a profound, five-minute journey through lush layers of intricately interconnected psy sounds. Spoken word interplays with serene vocalizations, while whizzing melodies drift across subtle basslines and sapid sub-bass growls. As always, Desert Dwellers makes complex compositions seem as simple as breathing.
Lose (or rather, find) yourself in the premiere below, and head over to Bandcamp to pick up the entire album once it drops Friday.
Available March 20 via Desert Trax.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
It was a bit of both. You see, the original version of this track was a psy-trance song we wrote over 10 years ago. When we started getting into the deep dubstep sound, like five years ago, we thought it would be sweet to half-time our old trance songs into dubstep tracks. This is one of those tracks!
Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
This is a sunrise or morning track for sure—outdoor in some beautiful location, perhaps in the desert, would be perfect! It also worked great at sunrise in the Costa Rica jungle at Envision Festival; we played this track during an epic surprise sunrise set at the very end of the festival. People were blown away and lost in a trance when we dropped this one for sure! It is quite a journey.
How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
As producers, we are constantly searching for that place that bridges worlds and genres, both ancient and futuristic. This track really exemplifies our ethos by combining amazing classical East Indian vocals, hand percussion, and the sounds of nature with spacious analog synths, a sublime dubstep beat, a rolling bassline, and trippy synths and effects into a perfect sonic tapestry. The spoken-word vocals also capture our personality and ethos of spacious freedom in the desert: “Let go, breathe,” like a “bird over sand dunes.”
Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
It was a lot of fun to dissect it and remix it into a half-speed psy-step track so many years later with all the new tools and production tricks we have now. It wasn’t more or less challenging than the others, as we have put a lot of time and effort into all the tracks on the album.
Choose one feeling that sums up this release, and describe it to us.
“Accomplished,” because creating an album like this has been a dream of ours for many years. It’s a multi-genre journey that takes many unexpected twists and turns, and it took us a while to bring it to completion.
