Emperor Returns to His Intergalactic Roots on “Calypso”

Returning to the scene of the crime, Emperor follows up on his skull-twisting Neodigital appearance with an epic four-tracker in the form of his Shadow EP for the Neosignal mother ship. From curb-stompers like “Defect” and “Tireless” to the battle cry of the title cut, Emperor channels alien soundscapes and twisted digital grooves sure to have all the mech-warrior crew out in full force.

With all that heat, we were hard-pressed to choose just one favorite to feature as our Track of the Day. In the end, we settled on the straightforward weaponry Emperor flexes on “Calypso.” Easing us into things with a deceptively smooth and stepping beat, the darkness bleeds in slowly from the edges before the drop releases an untamed mid-range hook designed to grab hold of your synapses and melt your face off, slipping and sliding its way through the cut like a bacteriological agent on fire. Be sure to stick around through to the second drop, as the intergalactic outlaw vibes level up and prove Emperor is at the top of his game.

“This track is definitely one of my favorites from the EP,” Emperor tells Insomniac. “I had a lot of fun playing around with different resonant modulation on basses. I made this one in Serum, and the modulation was different every time I played it, which gave it a nice variation throughout the track. It’s a little nod to one of my favorite tracks of all time by DJ Fresh, called ‘Heavyweight.’”
