Hatiras ft. MC Flipside “Autograph” (Perfect Driver Remix)
The L.A.-based label Perfect Driver has been putting out some serious heat, supplying DJs like Chris Lake with some secret weapons. In addition to A&R, the label boss Matthew Anthony has kept busy in the studio and cranked out a wobbly remix for the vintage Hatiras & MC Flipside track “Autograph.” Devoid of any breakdowns, this track rides a steady groove. Enjoy the first listen below, and be sure to pick it up before your next house party, as it drops April 23.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
Given the turnaround on this remix project, as a whole, it could be considered impulsive, in a fun way! It started with a tweet from MC Flipside asking for a Perfect Driver remix to “Autograph.” The original was a vintage favorite of mine, so I jumped at the opportunity! I turned off my phone and wi-fi and then jammed out in my home studio for a couple days.
Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
I wanted to make a remix that pays homage to the original while delivering a vibe fit for a proper house party. Something that didn’t stray too far from what works at an underground, or someone’s backyard pool party.
What’s the takeaway here? Is there a message or vibe you hope to get across to listeners?
Always be dancing. I enjoy parties where people are moving to the music, so I created an edit without a long break or build—something with plenty of funk and nonstop groove.
How do you measure the success of a track?
Artists can measure success in many ways, including social media likes by fans, radio play, and DJ support. When looking at these numbers, I compare the results to my previous releases. If the outcome is better, I am happy. More importantly, I consider my track a success if it works on the dancefloor and is well-received by fellow DJs. If the music blows up by word of mouth and/or without a PR budget, it’s a sure sign of a winner.
What were you doing when you came up with the idea for this song? Did you drop what you were doing and get to work, or did you make notes and get to it when you could?
I was in a wooden shack on the north slope of an island volcano in the Pacific with internet. Seriously. I was in Hawaii, DJing at Asylum and Eleven 44 for the Perfect Driver Hawaiian Vacation. You can ask the promoters how excited I was when I received the text from Flipside. I pretty much talked their ears off about what I was going to do with the remix. I entered the deadline into my phone and set aside time to deliver.
