Ian O’Donovan’s “Tomahawk” Is Peak-Time Techno With an Emotive Edge
House and techno are two sides of the same 12″ single. One is the soulful Chicagoan “sound of the spirit,” and the other is the uncompromising Detroiter “sound of the street.” And the one name you can trust when it comes to capturing that mind-bending soundtrack of the streets is Carl Cox.
Over the past three decades, the UK veteran has been on the frontlines of dance music through his marathon DJ sets, his keen production output, and his signature underground label, Intec. (In fact, he just wrapped up his 15-year residency at Space Ibiza before its closure.)
Intec’s latest release comes from Irishman Ian O’Donovan, who’s made a quality name for himself on respected labels like Drumcode, Bedrock, KMS, Planet E and Loveland. Now, the Dublin-based producer returns with the new four-track Tomahawk EP. “The sudden sounding placement of the lead stabs combined with the dubby chords and strings,” says O’Donovan, “gave me an image of flying axes and wide-open plains.” The title cut is a pulsing jam, in which muzzled chords and gritty textures intermingle with a soaring synth glide. It’s peak-time techno with an emotive edge brought to you by the man, the myth, the legend himself, Carl Cox.
