James Mac “Time and Time Again” (Juliet Fox Remix)
Don’t get too caught up in trying to classify James Mac’s sound. Operating out of Paris, the Australian-born producer is known to dip into a few of the four-floor flavors, yet he does so without ever coming off as fickle. He’s about to drop his debut on Vicious Black, the underground offshoot of Vicious Bitch, and his delectably deep “Time and Time Again” single sees him volleying up the vibes toward the warehouse and club constituents.
Running the bit through her trusty tech strainer, Juliet Fox flings out a percolating roller with all the right pieces to inflate the party to its fullest potential. It’s a sly slice of house, boasting driving drum work that props up her on-point play of the vox. Just a hair shy of six minutes, she sculpts a gracious groove that will presumably put in the most hours during the graveyard shift.
Available July 20 via Vicious Black.
Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
James Mac: Yes, I think it’s important to have feedback from other DJs/producers that I either admire or work with to have an objective opinion. Focusing on one track for a length of time can limit one’s objectivity.
Have you played this one out in any of your sets? If so, what was the response?
I’m lucky that one of my residencies is at a private beach in the south of France, La Voile Bleue. This track fits really well with the summer ambience, both for those who like to dance and those who want to simply relax and listen with a cocktail.
Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
The creative process was quite long for this track. The inspiration for the track started with the vocals, and I quickly got a draft track together, which I submitted to my record label, Vicious Black (sub-label to Vicious Recordings) in Australia. After some to-ing and fro-ing and a few edits and modifications, we arrived at today’s version of the track.
Who is the ideal person to remix this track?
I’ve been really lucky with this track, because one of the remixes that I really wanted was Juliet Fox, who has previously released tracks with Vicious Black, and I felt that she would be the perfect person to create another dimension to this track with her darker, tech-house sound.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
The vocal for this track set the process into motion very quickly, and I had the draft finished within two days.
