As dance music continues to spread like crazy and spill over into new continents, Japan has been earning its keep. Perhaps one of their hottest exports holding it down across the Pacific is a man by the name of JAXX DA FISHWORKS. Aside from his renown as radio guru and director of Sushi Records, the Tokyo native has been putting out a whole mess of productions that push the limits and pull the numbers. His newest, due out in May, is an obstreperous speaker slugger that he’s excited to tell you about below:

I came up with some ideas for “LE LE” a while ago, right after I’d produced a bass breaks tune called “Why Won’t You Be With Me.” I used to play breaks, breakbeat and hip-hop, so all my basic ideas and beats are from those sounds. That tune was a new thing to me because there is fat bass with soulful vocals, so it sounded new but still reminiscent of old-skool sounds as well.

I love Main Course stuff and also listened to many tunes with trap vibes, so I wanted to add that vibe into the more old-skool-sounding stuff I was making—soulful vocals with the newer exciting sounds. Once those met well, it didn’t take much time to finish “LE LE.” EDM is cool, and I’m not against that, but I wanted to search beyond that and find something unique and new, wanted to come with this sound. I wanted it to be energetic and aggressive, but to make sure there’s a good groove, too.

The outcome is complete ear fuckery, a highly pressurized piece of broken beat submerged in jumbled, talking synth sequences, into-the-wild animal calls, and a breakdown that brings out a grip of blog house angst. Make sure to keep a lookout for this dude moving forward—that is, if you know what’s good for you.
