Jey Kurmis “Kari”
The name Jey Kurmis should jump out at you by now. The Leeds-based sensation is holding the key to the next gen of UK house, building a bass-laden brand aimed directly at the sweat glands of shakers from every corner of the club. After dazing dancefloors last year with his Hot Creations debut, Kurmis is ready to dig in again with his floor-raiding follow-up EP, Kari.
The titular cut points toward his penchant for low-slung rhythms with high-flung spunk. Permeating with bold personality, it throws manic utterances in the fold with buoying basslines and an inexhaustible hat-and-snare combo. Heads will freak, for sure.
Available November 13 via Hot Creations.
At what point in the EP’s timeline did “Kari” come into the picture?
“Kari” was the oldest track out of the whole EP. It was originally signed after the first EP. I name my tracks after people I know, like friends/family, so I have a great memory for the track, too.
Tell us about the headspace you were in when creating this tune?
I was back at home with my parents and had the afternoon to do something—nothing special, really. I had previously been with my friend Kari at my old place, and I said I wanted to name my next track after her.
How many versions did you cycle through before realizing “Kari” was a finished product?
Playing around with the bass and the vox, it was only four hours later I seemed to be really happy with the outcome and never looked over it again! It always gets a huge reaction when I play it, and I have been receiving messages about it for over a year, asking about release information, etc. Now, I am excited for the release!
How did you approach this release differently from your Hot Creations debut?
I had no different approach to it. I make my music as if I’m on the dancefloor. I want there to be a continuing flow and groove throughout the music, but also something different that keeps you moving. So for me, it was a case of bombarding Hot C with a load of tracks and waiting for them to select which ones were preferable to their sound.
What do you have lined up for 2016?
Everything is going at a rapid rate now and is all so surreal. In 2016, I have some huge things in the pipeline, which I could only have dreamed of. Some I can share, and some are either exclusive or in the process. A few things that seem to be going ahead are being brought in with the Paradise crew, and playing some incredible countries around the globe. Then other things, like my release schedule, which is jam-packed until at least June 2016 on labels such as Moon Harbour, Leftroom, etc. As for now, I’m just going to keep my head down and keep working hard.
