Joedan “Pacific Swag” (Mij Mack Remix)
Somebody at Saucy Records deserves a raise. The UK imprint has done a standup job at beating most to the punch, calling dibs on sleepers before anybody else cares to act like they’ve already been on it. Joedan is one of those aha finds, and he’s got a knockin’ EP coming out that’ll bode well with fiends of bass house and garage.
“Pacific Swag” is the name of the title cut, and it gets a nasty little rub from London’s Mij Mack. Maybe you know him from his recent releases on Black Butter or Main Course, and if you don’t, you gon learn today. Situating the original’s zippy piano keys against shuffling percs and below sea-level basslines, the remix sees Mack spitting his strongest game.
Available via Saucy Records.
Were you impulsive on this track, or did you have a sketch in mind before you started?
Seeing as this was a remix, I already had sounds to work with. I just added my flavour.
If this song were a color, what color would it be?
Green.
Do you think advances in computer technology and gear have affected your creativity?
Yes, I tend to work quite fast with my productions. The fact that plugins are a lot cheaper and easier to use makes it better for my production to flow.
Creatively, how did the work on this track stack up to previous studio sessions? Was this more challenging to complete than others?
I tend to work with three different variations of an idea/melody when I’m producing. With this remix, I was just playing around with a few bass sounds in Massive and found two I liked and worked within the track. This is the usual way I come up with ideas—by just playing around until something works.
Have you played this one out in any of your sets?
Yeah, I played it at XOYO. It went off!
What’s your favorite sound/synth/effect/etc. used here?
Definitely Massive; I tend to make most of my bass sounds wth it.
