Lupe Fuentes & Javi Lopez “To Perfection”

It’s not just a loaded release schedule that has the name Lupe Fuentes rolling off the lips of underground enthusiasts the world over. The Columbian-born, Los Angeles-based sensation is racking up accolades as the label-head of In the Loop and as an in-demand selector who can sling out calientísimo cuts with the best of them.

Her latest club concoction has landed on Kerri Chandler’s MadTech imprint as part of the MadTech 03 compilation, and it’s a sweat-heavy number for all hours of the day. Teaming up with Javi Lopez, together they plaster the collab with pecky perc hits and jolts of zapping synth lines that further demonstrate why Fuentes has a leg up on the competition.

If you were to describe this track as a scent, a signature fragrance as it were, what would it be called? If it were to have a tagline, what would it be?
The name of the track is actually PERFECT for a high-end fragrance that would simply be called “To Perfection.” The tagline would be something like, “For those who never settle for less… than ‘perfection.’”

Did you discuss or exchange ideas with other producers while creating this track?
Most of my tracks I do 100 percent alone, but regarding “To Perfection,” this track is actually a collaboration between me and Javi Lopez, who is a great producer and DJ from Spain. He owns a really cool underground label called Defined. I did a remix for Javi earlier this year called “Black Sequence” that ended up supported by some amazing people like Joseph Capriati, Rack N Ruin (Gorgon City), Panda and others. Javi and I have collaborated before, and usually, the process involves us sending updated versions of the tracks back and forth; but when he sent me the first half of the track, I got really inspired and finished the whole thing really fast. When I sent it back to him, we were both really happy how it came out and that it was completely finished. I sent it to Kerry Chandler over at Mad Tech, and he and Gary said they wanted to release it right away—and boom, there it is!

Was there one particular moment in the recording or mixing process of this track that made you feel as though you were creating something pretty damn special?
Actually, yes, there were three moments:
1. When I first started building the first part of the drop, I took a completely different approach from what I usually do, and I knew I was on to something.
2. When I added the vocals, I was really just feeling what I had created in a very deep way.
3. I am really into a lot of different elements of the track, and the overall sound of it, which is a little bit different from what I had been doing, and I will say that this track defines my current sound very well!

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
This track would be a killer soundtrack for your very own personal James Bond-type mission. Just add your own high-speed chase, some bombs, an exploding boat and some high-tech weapons, and you are all good!

Who is the ideal person to remix this track?
The ultimate person to remix “To Perfection” would have to be Kerri Chandler. Besides the fact that he is a true house legend and innovator, Kerry is a super creative person who puts, as he says, “an injection of soul” into everything he does. Kerry and his Mad Tech team are the ones who believed in this track from the very start, so to me, it would be the perfect match!
