Montel is no stranger to the groove. The Irish producer has been building his repertoire with releases on labels like Let’s Play House, ALiVE and Toy Tonics, and he’ll be adding to his arsenal with his forthcoming EP, New York Limits. He pays tribute to the historic sounds of the Big Apple with jacking drums and funky acid lines, which definitely give this an old-school house vibe.

Montel’s tenacity in the studio has secured him a busy release schedule for the upcoming spring. After the release of this EP on Roush, he has new music coming out on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound, Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom, and another for Underground Audio in April that’ll include a remix from Waifs & Strays.

You can pick up New York Limits on Feb 16.

Describe the best setting/activity to hear this track.
4am in a dark nightclub with a smoke machine, strobe, massive sound system, and heaving dancefloor! That’s what it’s all about!

How does this production reflect your personality/ethos?
It’s a club track with a nostalgic feel. This pretty much sums up my personality as a producer. I make all my music with the club and DJ in mind. I’m always trying to push things forward but still retain that true house music feel.

How do you measure the success of a track?
Obviously, by how wide its coverage spreads and how many people are actually playing and supporting it. But the longevity of a track is the real key. You know a track is truly great when people are still playing and enjoying it 20 years later, which I can only hope they will do with this track!

What were you doing when you came up with the idea for this song? Did you drop what you were doing and get to work, or did you make notes and get to it when you could?
I always get great ideas in the most random situations. I never used to write them down and just hoped I’d remember them, but I never could (laughs). So, I’ve started writing ideas down. I have a young family, so I unfortunately don’t have the luxury of just bouncing into the studio whenever I want; but I did act on this idea as soon as I could, because I knew it was a killer!

Have you played this one out in any of your sets? If so, what was the response?<
Yes, I’ve played it out at recent gigs, and it’s been great. It gets people grooving hard, and then the breakdowns have made for some great “hands in the air” moments, too!
