Squire Takes Deep Tech to a Jazzy Place With “When It Rains Into the Wild”

Prior to his 2010 Winter Music Conference debut and his first EP, Organic Life, on indie darling imprint Blanco y Negro in 2011, Barcelona’s Squire was better known as Jaime Alguersauri, a Formula One race car driver. Since 2015, Squire has been focusing on music exclusively, turning up on rosters for Bedrock, My Favorite Robot, and Parquet Recordings, to name a few.

Most recently, he threw down a hype b2b set with Behrouz at Burning Man, and the future’s looking busy with releases slated on Audiofly’s Flying Circus, Get Physical’s Kindisch sister label, and Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat imprint. His latest EP, due in November on Smoke N’ Mirrors, issues a challenge to dancers through its title: Your Body Is Ready, Is Your Mind?

Among the three deep and dark tech house grooves attempting to answer that question is “When It Rains Into the Wild.” Featuring big drums with a booming kick, a bassline that ebbs and flows like a rip current, washed-out atmospheric effects, and murmuring vocals that swirl above a buildup that takes its time culminating and cresting, the track has an improvised vibe you might expect from a jazz aficionado.
