Sydney Blu Holds It Down for Chicago House on “What I Need”
If Bouncin,’ the new EP from Toronto’s Sydney Blu, makes you feel more like you’re in Chicago, you’re radar’s on point.
Speaking about “What I Need,” our Track of the Day, the crimson-haired mixmaster says, “This track was inspired from raw House music—coming up in the Toronto dance culture, we were very influenced by true Chicago House. The first person I sent this record to when I finished it was Chicago House legend Gene Farris, to see what he thought. He sent me back an iPhone video of himself grooving to it, which was the biggest compliment.”
It’s easy to see what had Gene moving and grooving. Using a steady hi-hat thread, Sydney weaves together broken piano chords, space laser bleeps, and pinched and punchy vocal samples over a chugging bass reminiscent of Mark Farina—pretty much everything a house head needs to get their bounce on.
It’s no accident that the aptly titled EP comes to us via Playmobil Records, home to veteran house purists like Joeski, Harry Romero, and Gene Farris.
Available November 25 via Playmobil Records.
