Tor Transcends Time and Space With Divine Downtempo Offering “Myth”
What are we, if not reflections of every life lesson that has helped shape us into our ever-evolving selves? For Tor, a long look in the mirror and an eagerness to fully blossom as an artist has led to his next body of work, Blue Book, which will soon take up precious space on Emancipator’s estimable Loci Records back catalog.
The 10-track collection is not only his sophomore album, but a vehicle for the electronic anomaly to challenge his own ways of thinking and interacting with his craft. It represents the very essence of experimentation, its pages filled with analog-driven textures, grounded percussive arrangements, and a dynamic guided by his intent to break away from the norm. “Myth” is a musical chapter that tells a tale of both then and now, centered on a soul-stirring guitar riff that gradually flows into languid layers and hushing atmospherics drifting beneath a vocal sample that plays out like a story you’d never want to end. Tor sheds some light on his own connection with the tune:
“Myth” came together over a long period; it took a while to fit all the right parts together. I wanted to have this feeling that it kind of existed in a space between two eras, having the character of music from half a century ago mixed in with elements that also felt very modern. I wrote the melody around this scratchy guitar part that I love the sound of, and fitting in a driving drum break ended up working really well with the faster tempo. I had the vocal part for a long time with this amazing harmony from an old folk record that was waiting to find a good home, and they fit in perfectly with a bit of the choppy edits that I’ve been into lately. “Myth”’s placement on the album is right before the gears shift a bit as well, and feels to me like it’s looking back right before things move forward.
