Woz and Troy Gunner Kick Down Garage-Tinged Rumbler “DWN”
Getting the nod of approval from Monki can go a long way. The UK tastemaker has spent the last few years championing some of the most fertile names to come to light in her time, turning people on to them by way of her estimable BBC 1Xtra programming and the ever-impressive Zoo Music imprint she looks after. She’s recently given the go to WxT, making some much-deserved room on her label for the chummy project between Woz and Troy Gunner.
The two bright lights from Bristol have been ramping up efforts on the collaborative end most recently, exercising a level of diversity that’s hard not to notice. It shines through particularly on their forthcoming two-tracker, with the lead cut “DWN” really homing in on their penchant for astute drum sequencing. “Inspired by early Horsepower and El-B grooves, ‘DWN’ is an homage to the original garage sound, with a modern twist,” WxT tells Insomniac. A chopped-up vocal refrain runs through the majority of the production, while percussive complexities and rumbling bottom-end demand your attention beneath it. It’s an analog-tinged weapon WxT can whip out whenever they want to own the floor.
Available July 15 via Zoo Music.
